Loft Storage in Totteridge

Thinking about loft storage in Totteridge? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom

Loft storage designed for your room

Loft storage in Totteridge: what you get

Loft rooms are often bedrooms, so storage for clothes matters. A wardrobe under the slope, knee-wall drawers and dormer shelves make a complete set. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. For a home in Totteridge, it is planned around your things. If you are living with unused space in a dormer and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Totteridge is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Totteridge in the area you cover for loft storage?

Yes, Totteridge is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Totteridge?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Will the storage fit up my loft stairs?

Measuring the route is part of the design visit. We size every section for the tightest turn, and then assembled in the loft.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

Not when it’s planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. We do not alter insulation or vents.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do you do the loft conversion too?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It’s done on site, in the colour you choose. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the storage a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.

Loft storage for homes in Totteridge

About 30% of the homes in the streets around Totteridge went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 30% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Totteridge is partly covered by the Totteridge Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Around a third of the homes in the area around Totteridge (about 30%) were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In a post-war house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes is worth using.

Near listed buildings like The Priory, less than half a mile south of the centre of Totteridge, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your children go to The Totteridge Academy or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Close to Brook Farm Open Space? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What affects the price in Totteridge

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
