How we make bespoke kitchens for Friern Barnet

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a dresser that suits a period house and a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and kitchens can be anything from a narrow galley to an open-plan room. The kitchen is designed for your room as it is. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so fixings are chosen for each one.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Larders, dressers and tall cupboards are hard to find in standard sizes that suit an older room. We can build them to fit, with the same finish as the cabinets. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Built around your room
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Scribed to uneven walls

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Friern Barnet?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Kitchens in Friern Barnet: local notes

Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up about 28% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Friern Barnet, with about 27% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Friern Barnet. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Friern Barnet (about 25%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many houses of that era have had the kitchen extended or knocked through, so the kitchen is designed for the room as it is now.

If you live near Friary Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St John the Evangelist, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Heath Hall, about 2.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth hides adjustable feet and lets the cabinets sit level. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that is not straight.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make doors in a style that suits the house, painted in a colour you choose.

Pricing bespoke kitchens in Friern Barnet

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Examples of the look you are after

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so tell us what applies during the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and go through the layout, storage and finish, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop.
  5. The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer do the plumbing, electrics and gas. We do not arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
