West Heath Fitted Wardrobes

In West Heath, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. We design your fitted wardrobe at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Not enough hanging space
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall

When you need someone else

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Structural changes to the room

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors

Fitted wardrobes in West Heath

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, keeping long hanging where there is height and drawers or shelves lower down. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. If your home has a bedroom that never feels tidy and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around West Heath is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitted wardrobes in West Heath: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around West Heath were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 73%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Heath, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 79% of households in the streets around West Heath, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Close to Lesnes Abbey Woods? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Danson House, about 1.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

West Heath is part of the London Borough of Bexley, about 3 miles south of Sidcup. Homes in West Heath are part of the area we cover for fitted wardrobes. We list West Heath among 27 places we cover in Bexley.

We work across DA7, DA16 and SE2. Streets in the area include Hurst Lane, Hadlow Road and Denton Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. The A206 runs close to West Heath; on busy main roads, unloading fitted wardrobes takes a little planning. Other places close to West Heath include Abbey Wood (1 mile north-west), Crook Log (1 mile south), Lessness Heath (1 mile north-east), Upton (1 mile south) and Bexleyheath (1 mile south-east). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places such as Sidcup (3 miles south), Erith (2 miles east), Bexley (2 miles south), Northumberland Heath (2 miles east), Albany Park (4 miles south) and Bexley Riverside (2 miles east).

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in West Heath?

Yes, West Heath is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in West Heath?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How long does it take to fit wardrobes?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

It is worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom, including any slopes, windows or alcoves.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop.
  5. We install the wardrobes, hang the doors and fit the rails, shelves and drawers.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Advice

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, so you get more storage from the same floor space.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom

Living in a block of flats near Abbey Wood station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
