Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Brixton

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Brixton station?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Brixton?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Brixton?

It’s easiest to get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

How do you stop shelves from sagging?

We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. Long spans get a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip, a support or shorter bays, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Let us know about heavy collections at the design visit.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Built-in bookshelves in Brixton: what you get

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. We often mix the two so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. Most enquiries start with shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and room for a record collection, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around Brixton date from then. That gives full-height built-in bookshelves room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelves for books and files close to the desk make the day easier. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelves packed two rows deep

Near listed buildings like Roman Catholic Chapel of Corpus Christi, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Brixton, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
  • Let us know if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit

Leave a little air behind books on an external wall. Look out for damp signs early.

Store the heaviest items low down, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

What we do not do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Built-in living-room furniture in Brixton

In the streets around Brixton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 64 entries within half a mile of the centre of Brixton. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 50% of households in the neighbourhood around Brixton, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live in a flat close to Brixton station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Max Roach Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
