Bespoke kitchens in Angell Town: what you get

A dresser brings a traditional feel to a kitchen, and it suits many period homes. Each dresser is made for its wall, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. If you are living with a central island in a larger kitchen and a layout for a small or awkward room, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Angell Town, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. It’s useful to check those with the managing agent before fitting day. A leasehold flat may need consent for alterations, so check your lease first.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Angell Town

In many older homes, ready-made units struggle with lean and slope. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, while scribed and levelled cabinets keep the lines true.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • A kitchen island with room around it

If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Evangelist, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Questions we are often asked

Is Angell Town in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes. Angell Town is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Angell Town?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No. We make and fit the kitchen cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

How to get a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • Allow space to walk round an island
  • Talk to your other trades in good time

Use the cooker hood or open a window when cooking, to keep steam off the cabinets. Good ventilation helps paintwork last.

Damp walls should be dealt with before cabinets are fitted. Damp behind units can lead to mould, particularly on external walls.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives a smooth surface for painted doors, and the moisture-resistant grade suits a kitchen.

Birch plywood

Deep pan drawers need a strong box, and birch plywood suits them.
