Built-in bookshelves in East Ham

Built-in bookshelves in East Ham: what you get

Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. If you’re living with bare walls that could hold shelving and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy, built-in bookshelves made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around East Ham went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely during the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What affects the price in East Ham

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space
  • The number of doors and drawers

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

What to send when you get in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in East Ham?

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A room lined with books feels different.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Shelves packed two rows deep

If you live near Beckton District Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking station?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in East Ham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

How do I get a quote?

Simply fill in our short enquiry form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

For carcasses and fixed shelves, birch plywood gives a rigid frame that fixes securely to the wall.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on shelves and uprights.

What we do not do

Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
