Flats, blocks and rented homes
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
About our built-in bookshelves in Leamouth
Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you choose. We fit across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. If you are living with bare walls that could hold shelving and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large number of homes around Leamouth date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes tend to have open-plan living rooms with no chimney breast. That means built-in bookshelves often create the structure of the room, framing a screen or running a full wall. Many internal walls in newer homes are plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

What it costs
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How square the room is
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The number of doors and drawers
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Honest limits
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- Knocking through or altering walls
- Making good walls that cannot take fixings
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Leamouth
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Leamouth?
Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, Leamouth included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
I live in a flat in Leamouth. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you use our contact form.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
How do I get a quote?
It’s easiest to get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, including roughly how many books there are.
- We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design.
- We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Arranging a design visit
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Luke, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
