Walk-in wardrobes in Charing Cross, Westminster

In Charing Cross, we design walk-in wardrobes around the room you actually have. Your walk-in wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • Separate space for two people’s clothes

Walk-in wardrobes designed for your room

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Walk-in wardrobes in Charing Cross

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. We plan the mix around what you actually wear. Most enquiries start with long and double hanging planned around your clothes and a walk-in wardrobe in a box room, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Charing Cross, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted storage can sit in the alcoves or span the wall, chimney breast and all. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What you get with us

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

Charing Cross homes and walk-in wardrobes

In the neighbourhood around Charing Cross, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 50%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 752 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Charing Cross. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Westminster is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Charing Cross is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Martin in the Fields, less than half a mile north of the centre of Charing Cross, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For an older house near St Martin-in-the-Fields, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Charing Cross is about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster, in the City of Westminster. Whether your home in Charing Cross is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We cover places right across Westminster.

In W1F, W1D and W1S, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You will find streets here such as Duck Lane, Drury Lane and Bridle Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for walk-in wardrobes. Main roads around Charing Cross include the A4 and A301, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. We also cover the places around Charing Cross: St James's (1 mile west), Adelphi (1 mile north-east), Chinatown (1 mile north-west), West End (1 mile north) and Covent Garden (1 mile north-east). We also make walk-in wardrobes in nearby places such as Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles west), Connaught Village (2 miles west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles west) and Little Venice (3 miles west).

Local landmarks in Charing Cross

Around Charing Cross, we cover homes near Silver Cross Tavern, Westminster Abbey Choir School and London Library and the streets around them. Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Is Charing Cross in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. Charing Cross is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it’s useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.

Is it time for walk-in wardrobes?

After a loft conversion or a change of layout, a room may be left without a clear use. A walk-in wardrobe is a popular way to use it.

Walk-in wardrobes can help with:

  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Room for a growing wardrobe
  • A calmer, clearer bedroom
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room

If your children go to Soho Parish CofE Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
