About fitted wardrobes in W1S
The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts don’t waste height. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves in the bedroom and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom.
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- We visit to measure the room and discuss the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
- You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
What affects the price in W1S
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Homes across W1S and their bedrooms
Bedrooms across W1S might have alcoves, sloping ceilings, bulkheads or none of these. Fitted wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. The paint finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.
In the W1S postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 50%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. More than a third of the homes in W1S (about 50%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 77% of households in the W1S postcode district live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in W1S are well within our area. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.
Charing Cross: For a flat near London Charing Cross station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, so there’s normally a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
Flat-pack or bespoke?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Practical tips
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.
Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, particularly where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
What affects the price in W1S
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The overall size of the piece
- The number of doors and drawers
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
What to send when you contact us
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Where you live, with the postcode
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
FAQs: fitted wardrobes in W1S
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We will look at the room with you at the design visit.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. We don’t plaster or decorate. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The fitting depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The wardrobes are made in our workshop first before we come to fit them.
Do you cover W1S?
Yes. W1S is part of the area we cover. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the measuring visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
