Fitted wardrobes across WC1X: what to expect
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and a room too narrow for hinged doors.
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
- A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.
Quotes in WC1X
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across WC1X
We make fitted wardrobes for homes across WC1X, in Holborn and Clerkenwell and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it’s made of.
In the WC1X postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 38%) and the years since 2000 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Purpose-built flats are home to about 74% of households in the WC1X postcode district, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early. Of the 2 places we have local pages for in WC1X, 2 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so the way in is measured along with the room.
Holborn: For a flat near Farringdon station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.
Hanging rails
We place rails at the heights your clothes need: a high rail for long items and double rails for shorter ones.
Looking after your furniture
Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
- Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
- Empty the area where we will be working
With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then to keep them running smoothly. Don’t let shoes or bags sit in the track.
Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and keep sliding doors from crashing into the ends. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
Is bespoke worth it?
Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home.

- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
What prompts fitted wardrobes
The usual reason is simple: there is not enough storage. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
- Too little room for clothes
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in WC1X
Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?
Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We don’t plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
What happens at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
