How fitting works for walk-in wardrobes
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.
- We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- The units are made and finished in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the units are fitted and trimmed to the room. We then check the doors and drawers with you.
How to prepare
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Getting a quote
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

About our walk-in wardrobes in Clerkenwell
Many London homes have a small room that’s tricky as a bedroom. Lined with hanging and shelves, it can hold far more than a wardrobe in the bedroom, and the bedroom itself feels calmer. The layout leaves room to move and to see what you have. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are long and double hanging planned around your clothes and separate space for two people’s clothes.
In a block, a bedroom wall may be shared with the neighbours or the corridor, and that wall could be solid or plasterboard. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Clerkenwell, fixings are chosen with neighbours in mind as well as strength. Tall pieces are fixed back securely.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Bedrooms in Clerkenwell: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Clerkenwell, with about 28% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Clerkenwell is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Clerkenwell is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a period home close to St James's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Clerkenwell?
Some people want a calmer bedroom. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.
Walk-in wardrobes can help with:
- Somewhere for shoes to live
- A use for a small spare room
- Separate space for two people’s clothes
- Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Priory Church of St John of Jerusalem, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Before you choose who makes it
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- How parking will work on your street
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Will the quote be in writing?
Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Big standalone units don’t always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
Why choose us
- Saturday work by arrangement
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
- Every London borough and the City of London covered
Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Clerkenwell?
Yes, Clerkenwell is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Clerkenwell?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Walk-in wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
How are walk-in wardrobes priced?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
