Home working in Cubitt Town: local notes

About 67% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Cubitt Town went up since 2000, and about 17% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Cubitt Town, Historic England’s list includes Christ Church (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south, and Carnegie Library (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. For fitting in Cubitt Town, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.1 miles south. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If you live in a flat close to Canary Wharf station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Fitted home offices for homes in Cubitt Town

Cables are easy to forget and hard to hide later. We design routes through the desk and units for chargers, screens and printers. Any new sockets are fitted by your electrician, with the furniture designed to suit. We look at the sockets when we visit in Cubitt Town. If your home has paperwork and files with nowhere to go and no way to put work away, that’s what home offices are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Shelving over a desk on a plasterboard wall needs fixings into the studs or made for the board. Since many of the homes around Cubitt Town date from 2000 onwards, that is something we check at the measuring visit. Heavier storage stands on the floor.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What we don’t do

Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Connecting printers and screens
  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Built-in desks
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Filing drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. In our workshop the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. Your spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the office.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

FAQs: fitted home offices in Cubitt Town

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Cubitt Town?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Cubitt Town is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

I live near Canary Wharf station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is it possible to have a desk under the eaves?

Yes, in a converted loft room. We plan around the headroom, so you can stand at the desk. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.

Can you build a home office in an alcove?

It depends on the width and depth of the alcove. Lots of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelves and storage around it. We will tell you honestly when we visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Can you add power points to the desk?

That is work for your electrician. The furniture is designed to suit, with routes for chargers and screens. Your electrician can then fit them as planned.

Do you need fitted home offices in Cubitt Town?

Many spare rooms need to work as an office and a guest room. A built-in desk and storage can leave space for a bed. It puts the room to work most of the time.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A room with two jobs to do
  • A laptop that moves from room to room
  • Files and folders piling up
  • An tricky space with no furniture that fits

If you live near Mudchute Park and Farm, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

What to check before you book

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

How to choose a carpenter in London

Pricing fitted home offices in Cubitt Town

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, use our contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from fitted home offices starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
  • Note the position of sockets in the room

Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. That keeps shelves straight over the years. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If something stops working smoothly, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe it.
