About our wall beds in Deptford

Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. Typical reasons to get in touch are a studio that works by day and night and shelves or a desk around the bed; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a flat, a spare bedroom often doubles as a study or a guest room, and closed storage lets the room change role without clutter. Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Deptford. Doors and drawers are planned to open fully in the space you have.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Strengthening or rebuilding a wall

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it’s made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism

What affects the cost of wall beds

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking near your home

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you get in touch

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Shelves beside a wall bed often carry books, and birch plywood helps them resist sagging.

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek front, spray painting works well, and it’s done before fitting.

How fitting works for wall beds

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Bedrooms in Deptford: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 34% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Deptford, with about 22% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Deptford, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Paul (Grade I), under half a mile north-east, and Charnel House to Church of St Nicholas (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Deptford is covered by it. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

For families living near Tidemill Academy, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Queen's House, about 1 mile east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Paul's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Deptford is about 1 mile south-west of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. From period terraces to newer flats in Deptford, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Deptford is one of 22 places on our list for Lewisham.

Close by, we also work in New Cross (1 mile south-west), St Johns (1 mile south), Millwall (1 mile north), Isle of Dogs (1 mile north-east) and North Greenwich (1 mile north-east). Elsewhere in Lewisham, we also cover Catford (3 miles south), Sydenham (4 miles south), Hither Green (2 miles south-east), Crofton Park (2 miles south), Perry Vale (3 miles south) and Brockley (2 miles south). Common questions about wall beds

Is parking a problem for fitting in Deptford?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do you cover homes near Deptford station?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
