What affects the price in Deptford

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Where you live, with the postcode

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

How we make fitted home offices for Deptford

Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or doors that close over the desk at the end of the day. We’ll look at how the room is used when we visit in Deptford. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a guest room that’s needed for work and wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Deptford, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. Checking with the managing agent early helps the day go smoothly. If the flat is leasehold, check your lease before home offices are fixed to the walls.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Working from home in Deptford

In the neighbourhood around Deptford, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 34%) and before 1919 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 12 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Deptford. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in Deptford joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near St. Paul's, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Near listed buildings like Church of St Paul, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Deptford, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Deptford station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

What it is made from

Shelves

Shelving over the desk keeps reference books close. Lower, deeper shelves suit files and a printer. We plan the depths during the design visit.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the office in the colour you choose, so it can match the room or the woodwork. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Built-in pieces use the full height and the awkward corners.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Deptford

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Deptford?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Deptford station?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

In many homes, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It is scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We will check the size at the measuring visit.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as we can.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat does not fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and tell us how you work and where you’d like the office.
  2. At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you. New sockets are for your electrician, so it’s useful to think about them early.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the office we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. We make every part in our workshop, sized for the room and the route in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
