How we make built-in bookshelves for New Eltham

Shelving can frame a door or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. If your home has somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and books piled on the floor, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around New Eltham, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Working from home is another reason. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards underneath hide printers, paper and clutter.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Books with nowhere left to go

If you live in a flat close to New Eltham station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in New Eltham?

Yes, New Eltham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Greenwich and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Eltham station?

Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

How deep should bookshelves be?

The depth is set around your books. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support so it stays straight under books. Splitting the run into shorter bays also helps.

Birch plywood

For carcasses and fixed shelves, birch plywood gives a rigid frame that fixes securely to the wall.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Living-room storage in New Eltham

In the area around New Eltham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of New Eltham is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in New Eltham, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Eltham Palace, about 1.1 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Near listed buildings like Southend House, about 0.6 miles north-west of the centre of New Eltham, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
