TV and media units in Fortune Green, Camden
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in Fortune Green starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Speakers muffled behind doors
- Standard units leaving gaps
- Wasted space around the screen

About our TV and media units in Fortune Green
Everything starts with the screen. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you’re likely to upgrade, with a margin so it is not a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. Typical reasons to get in touch are equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Fortune Green date from then. That gives full-height TV and media units room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

The problems TV and media units solve
Equipment on the floor is another reason. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool, and keeps the floor clear.
Here’s what TV and media units can help with:
- A screen at the wrong height
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
- Standard units leaving gaps
- Nowhere good for speakers
For a family home near St Luke's Church of England School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.
What to check before you book
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- How they handle walls that are not straight
What we don’t do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Connecting the TV signal or internet
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, use our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
What it is made from
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes close to hand. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.
Moisture-resistant MDF
A large TV wall needs flat, stable panels. MDF gives smooth, even surfaces for painting with crisp edges.
Questions from Fortune Green
Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Fortune Green?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Fortune Green?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Will the cables be hidden?
That’s the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.
Where is the furniture made?
Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What affects the price of TV and media units?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We don’t plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
Living-room storage in Fortune Green
About 58% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Fortune Green went up before 1919, and about 13% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The Redington Frognall Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Fortune Green. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Fortune Green, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live near Kilburn Grange Park, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
