Loft storage in Gants Hill: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 53% of the housing in the streets around Gants Hill, with about 19% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Gants Hill, Historic England’s list includes Valentines Mansion (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Gardener's Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 41% of households in the area around Gants Hill live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. Loft conversions are common in London terraces, leaving eaves and sloping ceilings to use; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.
If you live near Valentines Park, eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is one of the older houses near St George's Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.

About our loft storage in Gants Hill
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. We measure and plan for the space you have in Gants Hill. Typical reasons to get in touch are standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Gants Hill, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What loft storage cannot fix
Not everything around loft storage is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Converting the loft itself, which isn’t our work
- Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
- Altering the structure of the loft
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

From workshop to your room
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You let us know about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
- At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured.
- The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- The storage is made at our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Empty the space we will be working in
Arranging a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes often don’t fit up narrow loft stairs. Our storage is made in sections sized for the route. That makes it possible to fit large pieces in a small loft. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Your questions about loft storage in Gants Hill
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Gants Hill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do you cover homes near Ilford station?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What are your eaves cupboards made from?
The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.
Is it time for loft storage?
Most people get in touch because the eaves are going to waste. The low spaces at the edge of a loft room are hard to use. Built-in storage makes that space useful.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
- An empty dormer that could hold shelves
- Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
- Ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs
If your children go to Gearies Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
