Window seats for homes in Gillette Corner

A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. Our window seats are made for bays, sash windows and the recesses beside them, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. For a home in Gillette Corner, it starts with a design visit to measure the window and discuss the design. People usually come to us about a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and unused space below a sash window, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Gillette Corner, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A ready-made bench is built for a flat wall and a square corner, but bays have angled sides and walls that are rarely flat. In a bay, a standard bench leaves tricky gaps. A bespoke seat follows the shape of the bay. It’s a bigger investment, and the gain is a seat that fits the space. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window and the room, including any radiator under it.
  2. We visit to measure the window and talk through the design. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the seat we have discussed.
  4. Your window seat is built in our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and the floor. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

The problems window seats solve

Storage is another big reason. A seat with a lift-up lid or drawers can hold toys, blankets, books or games. It adds storage without taking up more of the floor.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish

If you live near Boston Manor Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Window seats in Gillette Corner: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Gillette Corner were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 51%) and since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Gillette Corner, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 50% of households in the neighbourhood around Gillette Corner live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For a family home near Marlborough Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For an older house near St Mary's Church, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the seat a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Lift-up lids

With a lift-up lid, the whole space beneath the seat opens up. It suits blankets, toys and things you do not need every day. We make the lid to open and close cleanly.

Questions from Gillette Corner

I live near Syon Lane station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Gillette Corner?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

Many seats use both. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We will suggest a layout at the design visit.

When you need someone else

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Fabric covers and cushions
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Painting the walls of the bay
