How fitting works for loft storage

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and scribed to the slopes, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Loft storage in Grange Mills

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there’s often space going to waste. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. At the design visit in Grange Mills, we will see what fits. If your home has a new loft conversion that needs storage and space under the eaves going to waste, that’s what eaves cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around Grange Mills, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Grange Mills homes and loft storage

In the area around Grange Mills, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. 14 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Grange Mills. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The share of homes built before 1919 around Grange Mills, about 55%, is well above the figure for Lambeth as a whole, about 40%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of eaves cupboards.

Near listed buildings like The Bedford Hotel, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Grange Mills, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Balham station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For families living near Henry Cavendish Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves

When you load the drawers and cupboards, put heavy things low. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

Common questions about loft storage

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Grange Mills?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, with hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers lower down. It makes the most of the space. We’ll work out the layout when we visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

What affects the price in Grange Mills

There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What to send when you get in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, use our contact form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
