Fitted Wardrobes in Grange Mills

Thinking about fitted wardrobes in Grange Mills? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed

Fitted wardrobes in Grange Mills

In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and a room too narrow for hinged doors; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Grange Mills, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. Built-in wardrobes make use of the full wall, up to the ceiling, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Not enough hanging space

Kingswood House, about 2.9 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

How to choose a carpenter in London

When you need someone else

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Close to Wandsworth Common? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. Near listed buildings like The Bedford Hotel, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Grange Mills, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour before we start.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

When you contact us, these help most:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • How you want to use the space

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Grange Mills?

Yes. Grange Mills is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Balham station?

Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe to help avoid condensation and mould.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
