Window seats designed for your room

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

Ready-made seats rarely allow for a radiator. Put in front of one, they can trap the heat. A bespoke seat has a grille or open front designed in, so the heat can reach the room. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Window seats for homes in Hackney Marshes

Many windows have a radiator beneath them. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat is not trapped. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. When we visit in Hackney Marshes, we’ll check the radiator and plan around it. We make window seats from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and needing more storage in the room.

Older rooms often suit panelled doors, newer rooms plainer ones. For a home in Hackney Marshes, door styles are talked through during the design visit. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route during the design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It suits the frame and the seat top, which take weight every day. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers let you see everything at once. They’re often easier for children than a lid. We make the boxes from birch plywood for strength.

Common questions about window seats

Do you cover homes near Lea Bridge station?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is Hackney Marshes in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London, and Hackney Marshes is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?

Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. We do not repair sashes or cills.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

It depends on what you’ll store and how often you’ll reach for it. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers mean you don’t have to move the cushion.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How fitting works for window seats

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the finish you chose.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
