About our fitted wardrobes in Hyde Park Estate
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Hyde Park Estate, so bedroom space is often tight and every wall counts. Taking fitted furniture up to the ceiling adds storage without using more floor. Each piece is made in sections sized for the stairs, lift and doors, then put together in the room.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- Empty the area where we’ll be working
- Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.
Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hyde Park Estate
Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Paddington station?
Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Hyde Park Estate?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?
We plan it with you during the design visit, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, using moisture-resistant MDF. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hyde Park Estate
Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the area around Hyde Park Estate, with about 18% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Hyde Park Estate, 18 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Westminster included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Hyde Park Estate. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to London Paddington station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Hampden Gurney CofE Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
Hyde Park Estate is about 1 mile east of City of Westminster, within the City of Westminster. We can visit homes in Hyde Park Estate on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. Hyde Park Estate is one of 29 places on our list for Westminster.

Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.
Birch plywood
For drawers that are used every day, birch plywood boxes are hard-wearing, so they hold their shape.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
Do you need fitted wardrobes in Hyde Park Estate?
For some, it’s about a calmer room. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces, and everything has a place behind it.
Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
Handel Hendrix House, about 1 mile east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- How they handle walls that are not straight
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room.
- We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
