Lea Bridge TV and Media Units

How we make TV and media units for Lea Bridge

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Lea Bridge, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space for a soundbar and speakers and set-top boxes stacked on a stand.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the front room typically keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. Around Lea Bridge, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that is a common starting point. TV and media units built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Your questions about TV and media units in Lea Bridge

Does a conservation area in or near Lea Bridge affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Clapton station?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen with open bays for bigger speakers. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

The unit can be planned either way. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.

Do TV units need ventilation?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. We give each box its own space.

Can you plan for a future TV?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What prompts TV and media units in Lea Bridge

Equipment on the floor is another reason. A media unit gives each box its own ventilated space.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers

If you live in a flat close to Clapton station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them, so the paint is not scuffed.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear when you add equipment.
