Need built-in bookshelves in Lissenden Gardens?

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave.

Getting a quote

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Lissenden Gardens

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. If you are living with shelves packed two rows deep and room for a record collection, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Lissenden Gardens date from before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for built-in bookshelves is chosen. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, particularly behind loaded shelves.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Why bespoke in Lissenden Gardens?

Bespoke is not instant: there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It gives built-in shelves their built-in look.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. There is no grain to show through the paint.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Lissenden Gardens

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the area around Lissenden Gardens, with about 18% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Lissenden Gardens, 18 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. In Lissenden Gardens, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

For a flat near Gospel Oak station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Martin, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Keats House, about 0.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Tell us about parking and access during the design visit
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves

Painted shelves feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift books onto the shelves rather than pushing them across, so the paint is not scuffed.

If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

Questions from Lissenden Gardens

Is Lissenden Gardens in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. Lissenden Gardens is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in Lissenden Gardens?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How do I get a quote?

Simply tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
