Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. A written quote follows for the cabinets, materials and finish. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Starting with a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

About our bespoke kitchens in Lissenden Gardens

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. Each dresser is made for its wall, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. If your home has a dresser that suits a period house and a layout for a small or awkward room, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Lissenden Gardens, many kitchens still have a chimney breast, which can be built around rather than fought. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before cabinets go against it. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Lissenden Gardens?

Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. A larder or tall units can change how much you can store without crowding the room.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Open shelves with cupboards below
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose

If you live in a flat close to Gospel Oak station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What to check before you book

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Lissenden Gardens homes and bespoke kitchens

About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Lissenden Gardens went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 46 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Lissenden Gardens. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. So a van fitting furniture in Lissenden Gardens normally needs a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council. Tell us what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Keats House, about 0.8 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If you live near Parliament Hill, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Lissenden Gardens

Is parking a problem for fitting in Lissenden Gardens?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

I live in a flat in Lissenden Gardens. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we check this at the measuring visit. If the room is narrow, we’ll suggest other layouts.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

What does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Make sure an island won’t crowd the room
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in

Once the kitchen is fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. Go easy on the painted surfaces at first and avoid harsh cleaners. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is enough.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Any work on the gas supply
  • Moving water or waste pipes

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.
