About our TV and media units in Millbank
Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes and the cable route behind it. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. If you are living with bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and a tangle of wires behind the TV, that is what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Millbank, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
- We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables.
- A written quote follows.
- Once you are happy, the unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

When is bespoke worth it?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
Pricing TV and media units in Millbank
What you pay depends on:
- How square the room is
- Parking near your home
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The internal fittings
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- How you want to use the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
What prompts TV and media units in Millbank
Equipment on the floor is another reason. A media unit gives each box its own ventilated space, and keeps the floor clear.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- A TV that looks out of place in the room
- Cables trailing across the wall
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
If your children go to Harris Westminster Sixth Form or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.
Before you choose who makes it
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Will the doors close with even gaps?

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?
Bought units often have a single cable gap, but cables usually still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it, with access left for later changes. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Millbank were built before 1919 (about 47%) and since 2000 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Millbank include London Underground Headquarters (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Bluecoat School (national Trust) (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Millbank, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Close to St James's Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Common questions about TV and media units
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Millbank?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
My house in Millbank is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket, which we look at during the design visit.
Which boards do you build with?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Can a TV unit hold speakers?
Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.
