Vauxhall Built-in Bookshelves

In Vauxhall, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. We design your built-in bookcase at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving

Built-in bookshelves in Vauxhall

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. People normally come to us about shelves packed two rows deep and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Vauxhall date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. We plan built-in bookshelves around the existing sockets and aerial points, with routes for cables designed in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke shelving takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you’re only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What you get with us

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Finished by spray or by hand

How we price built-in bookshelves

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up later.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Built-in living-room furniture in Vauxhall

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Vauxhall were built since 2000 (about 36%) and before 1919 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 201 entries within half a mile of the centre of Vauxhall. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. That typically means a van in Vauxhall needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

If you live near Old Paradise Gardens, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a flat close to Vauxhall station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you cover homes near Vauxhall station?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Vauxhall is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Vauxhall?

Just message us from the contact page. It is useful to send rough sizes and a few photos, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Vauxhall

Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. A bowing shelf is normally too thin or too long for what it carries. We plan spans and thickness so shelves stay straight.

Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:

  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste

Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
