Built-in bookshelves in Lambeth
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bare wall above a doorway and room for a record collection.
Internal walls in newer homes are normally plasterboard on metal or timber studs, and the board alone is not meant for heavy loads. Around Lambeth, where many homes were built since 2000, that shapes how built-in bookshelves are fixed: tall units stand on the floor and are tied into the studs, and shelves use fixings made for the board where there’s no stud.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

When you need someone else
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Making good walls that can’t take fixings
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it costs
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.
- You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Preparing the room
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Getting a quote
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Lambeth
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My home in Lambeth is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Built-in bookshelves are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type into sound structure. If a wall isn’t suitable, we will tell you and suggest another approach.
How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Lambeth?
The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Lambeth
Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Lambeth, with about 21% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The Vauxhall Gardens Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Lambeth. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. So a van fitting furniture in Lambeth typically needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Woodstock Court, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Vauxhall station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Close to Old Paradise Gardens? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. You can take them to your next home. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house, which is the trade-off. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

When is bespoke worth it?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
