About our wall beds in North End
In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat, and at night it becomes a bedroom. Storage and shelving can go on either side or above, so the whole wall works hard. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a storage wall with a bed inside and more floor space in a studio flat.
Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around North End, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Bedrooms in North End: local notes
About 68% of the homes in the streets around North End went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of North End include Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Church of Holy Trinity (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 28% of households in the streets around North End live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.
Garden Lodge, about 0.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Kensington Olympia station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
North End is about 1 mile south of Fulham, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. We cover North End as part of our work across Hammersmith and Fulham, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our Hammersmith and Fulham coverage includes North End, along with the rest of the borough.
Every home in W14, SW6 and SW5 is within our area for wall beds. Streets in the area include Sun Road, Star Road and Field Road, and we cover homes on all of them for wall beds. We also cover West Kensington (1 mile east), Brook Green (1 mile north-west), Fulham (1 mile south), Hammersmith (1 mile west) and Brackenbury Village (1 mile north-west). Other parts of Hammersmith and Fulham we cover include Chelsea Harbour (2 miles south-east), Sands End (2 miles south-east), White City (2 miles north-west), College Park (3 miles north-west) and Old Oak Common (3 miles north-west).
Local landmarks in North End

From workshop to your room
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.

Related advice
When you need someone else
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Fold-down bed mechanism
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Shelves or a desk alongside
Caring for painted furniture
People planning wall beds often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Choose a mattress that suits the mechanism
- Decide who the bed is mainly for
- Think about where extra bedding will go
- Mention if the wall is a stud wall
The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.
If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the measuring visit too.
What affects the cost of wall beds
The price for your room depends on:
- The width and height of the space
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The internal fittings
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Helping us understand the room
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Your postcode and the borough
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, use our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Your questions about wall beds in North End
Can you make wall beds for a home in North End?
Yes, we work across Hammersmith and Fulham, North End included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.
How do you fit wall beds in a flat in North End?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Wall beds are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Will you provide a mattress for the bed?
The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We’ll go through those limits at the design visit so you can choose one that works.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.
