About our wall beds in Queen's Park

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and the bed fills the room even when no one is staying. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again, ready for work, exercise or play. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. People normally come to us about a real mattress for visitors and more floor space in a studio flat; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With a large share of homes around Queen's Park built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for wall beds.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Wall beds in Queen's Park: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Queen's Park, with about 13% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 34 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Queen's Park. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Brent included. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Queen's Park. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near West Kilburn Baptist Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Queens Park (London) station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Queen's Park is within the London Borough of Brent, about 1 mile north of Kilburn. We can visit homes in Queen's Park on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. We list Queen's Park among 29 places we cover in Brent.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Check there is room for the bed to fold down

Follow the mechanism maker’s guidance each time you lower and lift the bed. Make sure the floor in front is clear before the bed comes down, and don’t let children play with it.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. The fixing depends on the wall, and we look at it when we measure.

Why bespoke in Queen's Park?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, which suits some homes. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which can make a small room usable. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Common questions about wall beds

I live in a flat in Queen's Park. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Queen's Park?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

How fitting works for wall beds

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You let us know about the room and who the bed is for.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready to check.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What prompts wall beds in Queen's Park

Some people are tired of sofa beds. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A bed that fills a little-used room

For families living near St Luke's CofE Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
