Built-in bookshelves in Ratcliff
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, so storage is lost at the top. Built-in pieces use the full height.
There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
Why choose us
- Finished by spray or by hand
- We work across all London boroughs
- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home

Built-in bookshelves in Ratcliff
Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If you’re living with shelves deep enough for large books and shelves that sag under books, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Most households around Ratcliff live in purpose-built flats, whether in older mansion blocks or more recent blocks. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan room. Built-in bookshelves are designed for whichever you have.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat does not fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.
- You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. Read it through and ask us anything.
- We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
- The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.
Before we arrive
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Ask for a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

If you live in a flat close to Limehouse station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Stepney Green Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

When you need someone else
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Plumbing work around the shelves
- Knocking through or altering walls
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
How we price built-in bookshelves
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How square the room is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The number of doors and drawers
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Before the design visit
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, message us from the contact page with some details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Ratcliff?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
My home in Ratcliff is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Built-in bookshelves are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.
