Fitted home offices for homes in Ratcliff
Spare rooms are a natural choice for an office, though many still need space for guests. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or with doors that close over the desk when you finish work. We will look at how the room is used when we visit in Ratcliff. Typical reasons to get in touch are work things on show in the evening and a tangle of chargers and leads; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
A single long desk top may not fit in the lift or round the stair turn, so the desk is designed to come in sections. Around Ratcliff, most households live in purpose-built flats, so the route in is measured at the measuring visit. Joins are positioned so they’re neat and out of the way.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How it’s made
Hand-painted finish
Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It is done on site, in the colour you choose. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.
Doors and drawer fronts
Some home offices have doors that close over the whole desk. It suits a room that also has to work as a guest room or living room. The design visit is where we agree the doors.
How fitting works for fitted home offices
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.
- You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
- At the design visit we measure up and plan a desk and storage that follow the shape of the room.
- A written quote follows.
- Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.
How to prepare
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Fitted home offices for homes in Ratcliff
About 33% of the homes in the streets around Ratcliff went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 29% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Ratcliff, 20 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. All of London, Tower Hamlets included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Ratcliff. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Stepney Green Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day. If your children go to Marion Richardson Primary School or a school nearby, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, so storage is lost at the top. Built-in pieces use the full height.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before and after fitting day
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Consider your chair when planning the desk
- Estimate the shelf space you will need
- Look at the window and where the light falls
- Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. If anything is not right with the furniture, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll talk it through.
Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Wires pulled across an edge can wear it. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.
Questions from Ratcliff
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Ratcliff?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted home offices fitted in Ratcliff?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can a home office go in a loft room?
Yes, in a converted loft room. We plan around the headroom, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.
Can landlords use you for a rented flat?
Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. Access has to be agreed with the tenants for the visit and for fitting day.
How long does it take to fit a home office?
How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
