Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in St George's Fields
Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. A bowing shelf is usually too thin or too long for what it carries. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
- Books piled on the floor
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
If you live near Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

How we make built-in bookshelves for St George's Fields
Bookshelves don’t have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top. It makes use of wall space that’s typically left bare. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are books with nowhere left to go and storage for children’s books and games.
Most internal walls in homes from recent decades are plasterboard on studs, and the board alone isn’t meant for heavy loads. Around St George's Fields, where many homes were built since 2000, that shapes how built-in bookshelves are fixed: heavier pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back into the studs.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Living-room carpentry in St George's Fields: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around St George's Fields, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 164 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of St George's Fields. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, especially for larger pieces.
For an older house near Former Church of St Jude, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Near listed buildings like Old Vic Theatre, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of St George's Fields, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
St George's Fields is about 3 miles south of East Dulwich, part of the London Borough of Southwark. We can visit homes in St George's Fields on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. We list St George's Fields among 21 places we cover in Southwark.

Why bespoke in St George's Fields?
Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, so they bow once they’re full of books. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in St George's Fields
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in St George's Fields?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
How it’s made
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.
Shelves
Shelves can be fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.
- You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it is built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Tell us about parking near your home
Arranging a design visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
