Flats, leases and landlords
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
About our built-in bookshelves in London Docklands
Bookshelves don’t have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are wasted wall space around a door or window and shelves deep enough for large books.
Open-plan living is usual in homes built since 2000, and many homes around London Docklands were built in that time. In a room like that, built-in bookshelves can help separate the sitting area from the kitchen. Finished floors in newer homes mark easily, so they’re covered while we work.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.
- You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind.
- We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards, with the shelf spans in mind.
- A quote in writing follows. Read it through and ask us anything.
- We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
- The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Ask for a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
The price for your room depends on:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The overall size of the piece
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How many doors and drawers there are
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What we need to know
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Examples of the look you are after
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in London Docklands
My home in London Docklands is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is London Docklands in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. London Docklands is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Tower Hamlets and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
They can be, and many people choose a mix. We usually keep some shelves fixed for strength.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in London Docklands
Collections of records, art books or objects need particular depths and heights. Off-the-shelf bookcases seldom have the right depth.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
- Bookcases that lean or wobble
- Shelving that frames a window
For families living near Tower Hamlets College, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

How it is made
Shelves
Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support so it stays straight under books. Shorter bays are another answer.
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting is done in the workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.
