Built-in bookshelves for your home in Canary Wharf

Is bespoke worth it?

Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves tricky gaps, and fitted furniture uses that space. It works around service boxing too.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why work with us in Canary Wharf

Built-in bookshelves in Canary Wharf: what you get

Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. If your home has books with nowhere left to go and empty alcoves that could hold books, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Newer homes often come with a TV point and sockets on one wall but nothing built around them. A good number of homes around Canary Wharf went up since 2000, so we design built-in bookshelves around the existing points rather than moving them. If you want an extra socket, that’s for your electrician.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Canary Wharf station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Canary Wharf?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Canary Wharf?

Simply message us from the contact page. It’s useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that is often left bare.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. Many people choose both.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it is useful to sort them out ahead of time. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Living-room carpentry in Canary Wharf: local notes

In the streets around Canary Wharf, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 54 entries within half a mile of the centre of Canary Wharf. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. So a van fitting furniture in Canary Wharf usually needs a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 1.8 miles south. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Canary Wharf is within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 2 miles west of Whitechapel. Design visits and fitting in Canary Wharf can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Canary Wharf is one of 31 places on our list for Tower Hamlets.

Other places close to Canary Wharf include London Docklands (1 mile east), Poplar (1 mile north-east), Heron Quays (1 mile south-west), Coldharbour (1 mile east) and Blackwall (1 mile east). When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Space for art books and records

Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Canary Wharf, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Getting in touch

These details help when you contact us:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Where you live, with the postcode

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.
