About our bespoke kitchens in Stepney
We make the cabinets; the worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose. Knowing the appliance sizes early lets us leave the right spaces, from the oven housing to the dishwasher. Your quote sets out the materials and finish. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a kitchen finished in your colours and a kitchen that fits an uneven room.
Ceilings in post-war homes are usually lower than in a Victorian house, so wall cabinets can run to the ceiling and still be within reach. Because many homes around Stepney date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, that’s an easy way to add storage. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, leases and landlords
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.
- We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
- We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
- The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens
How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Stepney?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Kitchens are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Does a conservation area in or near Stepney affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
How long does fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
What does a bespoke kitchen cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Looking after your furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
- Allow space to walk round an island
- Deal with damp walls first
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
Hand-painted kitchens are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that wipes clean. It’s worth keeping a record of the colours used.
Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.
Bespoke kitchens in Stepney: local notes
About 31% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Stepney went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 30% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Stepney include Church of St John on Bethnal Green (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north, and St Augustine (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Tower Hamlets is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Stepney, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
If you live near Stepney Green Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 1.7 miles west. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.
Stepney is about 1 mile west of Whitechapel, part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Design visits and fitting in Stepney can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Our Tower Hamlets coverage includes Stepney.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Stepney
Others want the kitchen to suit the age of the house. Painted cabinets, a dresser or a larder can sit well with original features and suit the house’s character.
People usually get in touch with us about things like these:
- A kitchen planned around your appliances
- A kitchen that fits an uneven room
- A kitchen island with room around it
- A painted dresser for the kitchen
For families living near Redlands Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Real projects you can actually look at
What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens
The price for your room depends on:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The width and height of the space
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.
