The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall

Living in a block of flats near Seven Sisters station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

How we make fitted wardrobes for West Green

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where the space allows. There’s no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. For a bedroom in West Green, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. If your home has a room too narrow for hinged doors and gaps above and around standalone wardrobes, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around West Green are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It’s how a straight carcass meets a wall that isn’t straight.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.

Fitted wardrobes in West Green: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 61% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Green, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of West Green. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in West Green is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Parish Church of St Ann, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near St Philip the Apostle, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in West Green

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in West Green?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

We plan it with you during the design visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
