West Green homes and TV and media units

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around West Green were built before 1919 (about 61%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of West Green. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Haringey has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

If you live near Downhills Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For a flat near Seven Sisters station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Bruce Castle, about 1.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

About our TV and media units in West Green

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician. It is best done before we fit, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. Most enquiries start with bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and clutter around the TV; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around West Green date from then. That gives full-height TV and media units room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for TV and media units

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Honest limits

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Your questions about TV and media units in West Green

My home in West Green is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound, so we leave them open.
