Why bespoke in Whitechapel?

Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, and that’s a real advantage. Ours takes more planning: a design visit, a quote, making and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It still uses the full height.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

About our fitted cupboards in Whitechapel

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. If you’re living with a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and storage for towels and bedding, fitted cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Many homes around Whitechapel were built since 2000, and newer houses that have had the loft converted often have sloping ceilings and eaves to use. For lofts, the storage goes into spaces that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, fitted storage is fixed to plasterboard walls with fixings that suit it.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Before and after fitting day

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Measure the route into the room along with the room itself

New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. Treat the doors gently at first and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is all they need.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Whitechapel homes and fitted cupboards

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Whitechapel were built since 2000 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 19%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Whitechapel include Church of St Botolph (Grade I), under half a mile south-west, and Church of St Katherine Cree (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south-west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Purpose-built flats are home to about 80% of households in the streets around Whitechapel, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. For a family home near Canon Barnett Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live near Finsbury Circus, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

Advice

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Whitechapel

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Whitechapel?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

I live in a flat in Whitechapel. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk it through during the design visit.
