How we make fitted cupboards for Bellingham
Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and storage for towels and bedding, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Bellingham, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bay windows suit seating with drawers or lift-up lids, with a grille where there is a radiator underneath. Each space is measured and fitted cupboards are made to suit it.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitted storage in Bellingham
In the neighbourhood around Bellingham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and before 1919 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Bellingham, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. More than half of the homes in the streets around Bellingham (about 55%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses of that era often have a hallway wide enough for a coat and shoe cupboard, and a box room that can take more storage.
For an older house near St Dunstan, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. For families living near Elfrida Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Bellingham
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Bellingham?
Yes. Bellingham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lewisham and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Bellingham?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?
Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What happens when you come to measure?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
How much time does fitting need?
The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
These details are what make a cupboard look part of an older house.
Doors and drawer fronts
In a narrow hallway, the way doors open matters, so nothing blocks the way.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, and that’s a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it is built around your space. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Why choose us
- A spray or hand-painted finish
- Saturdays by arrangement
- 300+ projects completed
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- We build the cupboards in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Starting with a design visit
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Many flats come with little or no built-in storage. A cupboard in the hallway or a spare recess can change how the home works, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.
Requests we hear often include:
- A linen cupboard on the landing
- Cupboards that suit a period house
- A cupboard for the meters with easy access
- A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
If you live in a flat close to Bellingham station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
