Built-in bookshelves for homes in Bellingham

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. For a home in Bellingham, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. If you are living with shelving behind a desk for books and files and empty alcoves that could hold books, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Bellingham, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, built-in bookshelves can run the full length of one wall. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

How to prepare

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

I live near Bellingham station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Bellingham?

Yes, we work across Lewisham, Bellingham included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built at the measuring visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. The openings are measured when we visit.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

Living-room carpentry in Bellingham: local notes

About 55% of the homes in the area around Bellingham went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 18% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Bellingham. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Bellingham (about 55%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

If you live near Forster Memorial Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For a flat near Bellingham station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Bellingham

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels.

Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:

  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste

For a family home near Elfrida Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Bellingham

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
