Bespoke kitchens in Bellingham

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

About our bespoke kitchens in Bellingham

An island can be a good addition where there’s space for one. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. If your home has a painted dresser for the kitchen and a kitchen that fits an uneven room, that is what kitchens are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A larger semi or detached house may have room for a utility area or boot room by the back door. Much of the housing around Bellingham is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Utility cupboards can be made in the same style and paint colour as the kitchen. Plumbing for any appliance is for your plumber.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Think about how the cabinets will get in
  • Check there’s room around an island before planning one
  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first

Let steam escape when you cook, as steam settling on cabinets over time isn’t good for any finish. Good ventilation helps paintwork last.

Measure the route into the kitchen not just the room. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about tight turns or small lifts.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple modern kitchen, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is awkward, the house is older or you want a painted kitchen that suits it, bespoke is typically worth considering. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Bellingham homes and bespoke kitchens

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Bellingham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and before 1919 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Bellingham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. More than half of the homes in the streets around Bellingham (about 55%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many houses of that era have had the kitchen extended or knocked through, so the cabinets are made for today’s layout.

Near listed buildings like The Fellowship Inn Public House, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Bellingham, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 2.5 miles west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If your home is one of the older houses near St Dunstan, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Questions we are often asked

I live near Bellingham station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Bellingham?

Yes, Bellingham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Will you connect the sink and appliances?

No. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.

Do photos help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Can you fit a kitchen in a room with uneven walls?

Yes. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled, so the worktop you choose can sit level. It’s one of the main reasons people choose bespoke in an older house.
