How we make loft storage for Coombe

Behind the short walls at the edge of a loft room, there’s often space going to waste. Cupboards and drawers set into the knee wall make that space useful. Drawers bring the back of the space within reach. We measure and plan for the space you have in Coombe. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised and a loft room that still feels unfinished.

Some post-war homes still have their original hall or landing cupboards, often with doors and shelves that are ready for a rethink. Many homes around Coombe date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so those spaces are worth a look. New carcasses are made to fit the opening and fixed to the wall behind.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Your questions about loft storage in Coombe

I live in a flat in Coombe. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near South Croydon station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How much does loft storage cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What affects the cost of loft storage

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What to send when you get in touch

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf pieces come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, so it sits with the rest of the room. Big ready-made pieces can be awkward to carry up communal stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections made to fit the route. It is then assembled in the room.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

How fitting works for loft storage

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so the right fixings are part of the plan for fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in, and the pieces are assembled in the room.

  1. You tell us about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so use the doors and drawers gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from loft storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both

Keep the ventilation behind the eaves clear. The storage is planned to keep airflow, so leave that space open. It helps keep the loft in good order.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Insulation pressed flat doesn’t do its job. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.
