Fitted wardrobes for your home in De Beauvoir Town

How we make fitted wardrobes for De Beauvoir Town

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an awkward corner into storage. Most enquiries start with wardrobes that are full to bursting and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around De Beauvoir Town, and in a flat, bedrooms rarely have space to spare. Taking fitted furniture up to the ceiling adds storage without using more floor. The furniture is built in sections that fit the route into the flat, and assembled once it is inside.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in De Beauvoir Town

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in De Beauvoir Town?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in De Beauvoir Town?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in De Beauvoir Town?

Yes, we do. We work in De Beauvoir Town and across Hackney.

Which boards do you build with?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. Slopes, chimney breasts, low windows and doors in tricky spots leave standard wardrobes with nowhere to go. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • No space in front for doors to swing
  • Not enough hanging space

If your children go to Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How parking will work on your street

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and deal with any damp early.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished. Treat them gently while the paint cures fully.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
