Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.
Hand-painted finish
Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish in an older house. The colour is agreed with you.
Fitted cupboards for homes in Southwark
A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. We make fitted cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are storage in a corner nothing else fits and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags.
Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so they’re protected while storage is fitted. Many homes around Southwark were built since 2000, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. The storage can sit on its own plinth or be scribed over the skirting.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Southwark
In the neighbourhood around Southwark, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Southwark include The George Inn (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east, and Church of St George the Martyr (Grade II*), less than half a mile east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Newer homes are more common around Southwark than across the rest of London: about 46% date from 2000 onwards, against about 28%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes plasterboard stud walls and compact rooms more likely, which shapes the fixings and sizes.
For families living near Charles Dickens Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live near Little Dorrit's Playground, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.9 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.
Southwark is in the London Borough of Southwark, about 3 miles south of East Dulwich. Design visits and fitting in Southwark can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, large and small.

What happens on fitting day
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.
- You get in touch and let us know where the cupboards should go.
- We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
- We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop.
- We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Starting with a design visit
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Related advice
What it costs
The price for your room depends on:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The internal fittings
- How big the furniture is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.
Getting in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Before and after fitting day
People planning fitted cupboards often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Think about what each cupboard will hold
- Let us know about parking during the design visit
- Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed, so the space keeps working.
Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.
Questions from Southwark
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Southwark?
Yes, Southwark is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
I live near Elephant & Castle station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?
Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away and still leaves them reachable. Moving them isn’t our work, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.
What are your cupboards made from?
Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
