Fitted cupboards in Elephant and Castle: what you get
In many London hallways, space is tight, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there’s somewhere to sit by the door. If you’re living with somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and tall cupboards where space is short, fitted cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Many homes around Elephant and Castle were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats with compact layouts. Where a boiler or cylinder sits in a cupboard, the design keeps the clearances its maker sets out. Shallow cupboards suit narrow halls, so the hallway still feels open.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Making use of tricky spaces in Elephant and Castle
About 39% of the homes in the streets around Elephant and Castle went up since 2000, and about 20% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Elephant and Castle, 30 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Elephant and Castle, let us know at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St George the Martyr, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to London College of Communication or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. For an older house near Metropolitan Tabernacle, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
Ready-made cupboards are normally made from chipboard with a printed or plastic finish. Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, so the finish can match the room. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It works around service boxing too.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.
How fitting day works
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing.

Related advice
How it is made
Doors and drawer fronts
Doors on a meter or fuse board cupboard need to open easily, so engineers can reach what’s inside.
Plinths and scribe strips
We use a plinth to set the cupboard level on an uneven floor. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.
Your questions about fitted cupboards in Elephant and Castle
Do you cover homes near Elephant & Castle station?
Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
I live in a flat in Elephant and Castle. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour agreed with you.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, get in touch through our contact form.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What affects the cost of fitted cupboards
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How big the furniture is
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
