About our fitted cupboards in St George's Fields

A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, while any work on the boiler is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are making use of an awkward alcove or corner and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots.

Many homes around St George's Fields were built since 2000, and in a newer house with a converted loft, the eaves and slopes are worth using. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, fitted storage is fixed to plasterboard walls with fixings that suit it.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Pricing fitted cupboards in St George's Fields

The price for your room depends on:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and what it needs.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF door has a clean, even look, and the moisture-resistant grade copes with damper spots.

Shelves

Sagging shelves are avoidable, so we size each one for its span and load.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap at the side or a space above. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, so less space goes to waste. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

St George's Fields homes and fitted cupboards

In the neighbourhood around St George's Fields, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of St George's Fields is in the St George's Circus Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Purpose-built flats are more common around St George's Fields than across Southwark: about 81% of households, against about 64%, the 2021 Census shows. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Benjamin Franklin House, about 1.1 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. If your children go to St George's Cathedral Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live near Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in St George's Fields?

Yes. St George's Fields is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

I live in a flat in St George's Fields. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.

How much time does fitting need?

Every job is different. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
