Fitted cupboards in Newington Butts
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and cupboards that suit a period house.
Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so they’re protected while storage is fitted. Many homes around Newington Butts were built since 2000, and their plasterboard walls need fixings into the studs or made for the board. The storage can sit on its own plinth or be scribed over the skirting.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Newington Butts, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.
For a flat near Elephant & Castle station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near Metropolitan Tabernacle, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. Close to Newington Gardens? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know at the measuring visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and describe the space.
- At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in. It helps to tell us about parking then, as a van usually needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
- We send a written quote.
- In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Advice
Why bespoke in Newington Butts?
There’s a place for both. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. Where the room is tricky, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is usually the better answer. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Newington Butts
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- We work across all London boroughs
Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.
Could you do it yourself?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Questions from Newington Butts
Is parking a problem for fitting in Newington Butts?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you cover homes near Elephant & Castle station?
Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?
Yes, that’s part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
