Fitted cupboards for homes in Dollis Hill
In the area around Dollis Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 47%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Part of Dollis Hill is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Dollis Hill is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If your children go to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Junior School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Living in a block of flats near Brent Cross West station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Heath House, about 2.3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

About our fitted cupboards in Dollis Hill
We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and landing shelves for bedding and towels.
Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. Around Dollis Hill, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What it costs
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Parking near your home
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you get in touch
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
To make a start, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
These details are what make a cupboard look part of an older house.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood suits carcasses that carry a lot of weight, like those in a utility room.
What happens on fitting day
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- First, you tell us about the room and what it needs.
- We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
- A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.
Preparing the room
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Ask for a quote
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Questions we are often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Dollis Hill?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Dollis Hill?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London, and Dollis Hill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
How much time does fitting need?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What else we make in Dollis Hill
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap at the side or a space above. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, which can add a good deal of storage. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
