Walk-in wardrobes in Lower Holloway

About our walk-in wardrobes in Lower Holloway

Ventilation matters in a room full of clothes, particularly where it sits against a cooler external wall. Good ventilation helps avoid condensation and mould, and we design the units to allow for it. If you are living with shelves for shoes and bags and more space for clothes and shoes, walk-in wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

With most households around Lower Holloway in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern blocks are both possible. In a mansion block, bedrooms often keep their chimney breasts and tall ceilings, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls. The fixings are chosen for whichever wall you have.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Bedrooms in Lower Holloway: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Lower Holloway, with about 24% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Lower Holloway is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Lower Holloway joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For families living near Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Living in a block of flats near Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Near listed buildings like The Clock Tower, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Lower Holloway, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Getting in touch

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it is useful to send:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units and trim the edges to meet the walls and ceiling.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Getting a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Related advice

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Is Lower Holloway in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes, we work across Islington, Lower Holloway included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

I live in a flat in Lower Holloway. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Walk-in wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Can a box room become a walk-in wardrobe?

In many homes, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls and still leave room to move. We check the room at the measuring visit.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

What we do not do

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Structural changes or removing walls
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Damp treatment or repairs
